Learning How to Turn Twitter Tweets into RSS Feed

June 24, 2014

Thanks to great people on the internet I was able to learn very quickly how to turn any twitter tweets into an RSS Feed. And this RSS Feed can be used anywhere! and it can be even displayed within a blog post!

With the new Twitter API v. 1.1 this became a more complex operation than it used to be.
Luckily there are fantastic teachers out there who share their great work-arounds for free.

My great learning journey started with Amit Agarwal and his blog post and video on
How to Create RSS Feeds for Twitter – Video Tutorial.
If you follow carefully his steps you will end up with an url that will be the first step towards the RSS Feed to be used anywhere. (If you want to turn your own twitter tweets into RSS see advice at the end of my blog post).

Once you created this url it will only work in Feedly or in Feedbin. Most other RSS Readers will not accept at this point. This was advised by the web-geek Mona Sorcelli.

It was through the help of Manuel Meurer and his great post on How to set up automatic retweeting using a Google Apps Script, Yahoo Pipes, and TwitterFeed.
From this post you will only need the second act – the Yahoo Pipes. Click on the link of his published pipe on Yahoo and enter the URL you created with the help of Amit Agarwal and you will get to an RSS Feed that can be used anywhere. (If you want to customize the feed your way – see further down in my blog post).

To get the final RSS feed to use in any RSS Reader or website click on the button “Get as RSS” that will appear once you run the Yahoo Pipe of Manuel Meurer. Copy the RSS Feed URL from the browser into any RSS Reader.

Display RSS in Blogpost or Website with Javascript
Or use the tool on the website Feed2Js (Alan Levine) to create a javascript code to place in your website or blog post. See my example: Gotthard Tunnel RSS News and Traffic News. Feed2Js will update the feed every 60 minutes.

Turn your own twitter feed into RSS feed
If you want to turn your own twitter feeds into RSS than you can use the following approach shown by Neil Ball – How To Create A Twitter RSS Feed – New Version Since API Switch Off.

Manipulate the Output of the RSS feed
If you want to customize the output of the RSS feed that you get out the Yahoo Pipe created by Manuel Meurer please visit my clone of his Yahoo Pipe. I had to add the user input element “URL input” at the beginning of the pipe to make the clone work.

Automatic Twitter Updates triggered by the RSS feed
And thanks to Manuel Meurer advice you can use Twitterfeed to create automatic retweets.
Twitterfeed will usually only update every 30 Minutes.

I use IFTTT (If This Than That) which is usually faster than Twitterfeed.
Choose Feed as your trigger channel and insert the url to your rss feed.

Realtime Updates with Pubsubhubbub

There is also a faster way if you reprogram the google script from Amit Agarwal  to include pubsubhubbub. Pubsubhubbub provides realtime notifications. It was developed by Brad Fitzpatrick and Brett Slatkin of Google and Martin Atkins of Six Apart.

The XML created with the google script from Amit Agarwal would need the following addition:

< atom:link rel=”hub” href=”http://pubsubhubbub.appspot.com”/  >

More useful Information on pubsubhubbub is here.
Hope I was helpful.

The Top List – Learning to be a True American Citizen – The US American Lifestyle According to Google Trends Top Charts

July 24, 2013

captivating eyes
First time to the US? And are you just invited to attend your first dinner party ? You want to make sure that you connect with your hosts ?

If you follow the Google Trends Top Charts ( http://www.google.com/trends/topcharts) there is a great chance that you bond with your host and their guests, but there is no guarantee if you just get into the center of attention or in the center of a fight.

Meet John the stereotype US American Citizen according to the Google Trends Top Charts. John is driving a Ford Mustang. He enjoys a Martini and wears clothes from Forever 21 which he buys online at amazon.com. He studied at the University of  California and likes to spend his holidays in New York City. His favourite author is  William Shakespeare and his favourite book is The Bible. John is a dog lover and his Pit Bull is three years old. At parties he likes to talk about Basketball, about his favourite team the Miami Heat or about Baseball where he supports the New York Yankees. On Sundays he watches the English football premier league and puts his bets on Chelsea F.C.

His children play with Lego and he likes to take them out to Pizza Hut. In the evening he watches Spongebob Squarepant with them.

In the morning and during the day he will drink coffee. At work he needs to know a lot about SQL. He will finish a good party with a Jack Daniel’s. In his past time he is interested in science, mainly in the moon and he is a great admirer of Albert Einstein. John has his savings invested in Gold and takes great concern about his family health. He knows a lot about antibacterial medication. He likes to follow the news on the United States and the United Nations. With his wife he watches the Oprah Winfrey morning show. John does his banking with Wells Fargo and tanks at BP.

Now please guess – what candidate did John vote for in the last presidental election ? What is his favourite actor? What is his favourite artist ?

What you shouldn’t do at the dinner party:

Ask John when William Shakespeare will release his next novel and if this author was invited by Oprah Winfrey yet.

If John tells you that he is banking with Wells Fargo do not reply: What a beautiful name of your girlfriend and it actually reminds me of the movie Fargo where…

Do not recommend John an alternative book to the Bible.

Do not tell him that he looks like fourty something.

Now joking aside. While Google Trends Top Charts shows the main searches yet these searches are independent and their is no correlation to the people. It is one of our thinking bias that like to establish links or pattern where there are none. I am just reading the book of Daniel Kahnemann Thinking, fast and slow. He explains all the thinking biasis we are exposed to.

If you like to find hot topics for your dinner party have a look at buzzfeed, reddit, huffington post, mashable, tmz or twitter.

Gotthard tunnel traffic updates – the smart blog post

Live traffic updates: Gotthard tunnel traffic update

Everyone talks about smart phones today. What about smart blog posts ?
I am just testing this new idea of intelligent blog posts on ppalme.blogspot.com.

It is not just a post on a blog with text and pictures.Iit also contains small little widgets.
One widget for example  is showing all the twitter tweets with the hashtag #Gotthardtunnel.

Additionally it displays  live webcams along the way and has a link to the google traffic map showing the area of the
Gotthard tunnel motorway A2.

Blog posts are easy to display on smart phones and won´t require any apps programming and downloading for the end user.  So drivers can easily get an update on how the traffic flow is towards the Gotthard tunnel and away.
Other drivers can use the hastag #Gotthardtunnel to update on the traffic along the way.

I can add at any time more and more  intelligence to the blog post as I go along.

I just did. Now it includes a google news rss feed on the latest news on the Gotthard tunnel.

Please see my example : Gotthard tunnel traffic update

My New Work-Life Balance With iGoogle – Series 1

March 14, 2008

igoogle Group

Work: I am looking after the development of a few thousand leaders and employees with a very diversified cultural background stretching over 14 hours time zone.  Life: I have two little kids and my wife is working as a system engineer.

Over the past years I have aquired many new skills and best practices to be more effective. I use speed-reading, speed writing, speed leading and also the process from David Allen – Getting things done – The Art of Stress-Free Productivity and Six Sigma.

And now I am starting to use the latest powers of Web 2.0 to get one more step ahead in designing the ultimate work-life balance.
It was last Sunday when I came about iGoogle. And there it was the ultimate environment to get my whole life and work organized in an instant.
So what has changed since then ?
I have setup two iGoogle accounts – one is for work and the other one for life.

Whenever I am at work I go to my iGoogle work account. There I have a number of gadgets that do some fancy stuff for me. I get the latest leadership quote of the day, the stock price of the company I work for, the latest news through Google Reader about my employer, all the news about Management, Leadership, Talent Management, Employee Development, Career Development and Human Resources and the weather forecast. I have also added Google Bookmarks and the be Twittered Gadget where I see the latest twitter for example from New York Times.
What is the result of this iGoogle for work ? Well, it takes me just 5 minutes and I have the latest update on my company and on my profession.
What other gadgets should I add ? Please leave your suggestions in the comment section below. Thank you.

Twice a day I will log into my iGoogle for Life.  There I can leave a note for my wife or vice versa, see where it is raining or snowing (radar) right now, the receipe of the day or I can search for one, the latest discount offers, another to do list, the snow report of our favourite ski resort, time table search for the public transport, what is on teli tonight, what are the latest movies released, send a free sms, MSN Messenger, News (Menshealth, automotor, etc.), Telephone Book search, Route Search, Translator and search on eBay.
What other gadgets should I add ? Please leave your suggestions in the comment section below. Thank you.
